Pixie Lott

At a time when reality TV shows are catapulting countless young starlets into the UK charts, all peddling carefully chosen and marketed material, it’s arguably harder than ever for a young singer-songwriter to stand out from the crowd. However, if that is the general rule, then Pixie Lott is the exception to it: and what an exception. Probably best known for her knock-out debut single ‘Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh)’, the young singer has experienced an extraordinary level of success since her breakthrough in June 2009. In under a year, she has released two UK number one singles, a hit album that reached number six in the UK Albums Chart, and is purported to be the first female solo act ever to debut at the top of the UK Singles Chart without the backing and exposure of a TV talent contest behind her. This amazing rise to fame and glory apparently left Pixie in a state of shock… although she’s probably not complaining!

Born in Bromley, London, Victoria Louise Lott began honing her voice at her church school when barely out of her nappies. Nicknamed ‘Pixie’ by her mother due to her small size as an infant, the young star-to-be was already firmly on course for a life as a performer, duly signing on at the Italia Conti Associates Saturday school when only five years old. After graduating to the main school aged eleven, the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, the young student went on to land roles in the West End production of ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, the BBC One show ‘Celebrate the Sound of Music’, the opera ‘Ça Ira’, and also appeared in an episode of the MTV show ‘My Super Sweet 16 UK’.

A pop career beckoned. Tipped for the top by all who heard her material, ‘Mama Do’ had only been released for a few days before Lott had made her first festival appearance, at the Isle of Wight Festival 2009. This fast track to fame continued as Pixie supported The Saturdays on ‘The Work Tour’, and then appeared alongside the likes of Kasabian at the ‘MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia’ concert in mid-August.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Pixie then released both ‘Boys and Girls’, her second single, and her debut album ‘Turn It Up’ in September 2009, cementing her rise from zero to hero(ine) within the space of four short months. Since then, she has released a further two singles, ‘Cry Me Out’ and ‘Gravity’; landed two MTV Europe Music Awards, and gained nominations for three Brit Awards. Surely now it’s time for a rest? Not likely!  Due to appear on the main stage at 2010’s V Festival, and also to support the mighty Rihanna in her ‘Last Girl on Earth Tour’ in May, it seems that this girl wants a Lott. And it would appear that she’s going to get it!
